Don’t You Want to Spot Liars?

There are a few quick and simple steps anyone can take if they want to spot a lair. There is no one out that who likes being lied to, and most people don’t like liars. Some people, like lawyers and politicians, make their living on bending the truth. But for most of us, lying is hurtful and we will take any step necessary to avoid it.
When a person lies to you, they are breaking a very important social bond. This universal bond is shattered by lies, since trust is a central component of every human relationship. By lying, someone makes it difficult or impossible to ever trust them again. Fortunately for us, we can distance ourselves from liars by learning to catch a liar early on in the relationship.
One of the most discussed methods of nabbing a liar dead in their tracks is by learning to notice eye contact. People usually retain eye contact with others during half the conversation or so, so if you notice their eyes are continuously darting around the room, especially when discussing what may be a sensitive topic, they could very well be lying to you.
Another simple way to spot a liar is by paying attention to their voice patterns. If their voice wavers or you happen to notice a variation in their pitch or their rate of speech during particular parts of the conversation, they may be telling you a whopper. Take note of the frequency of their use of words like “uhh” and “umm.” If they seem to be using them much more than normal, you may have a liar on your hands.
We all know that taking cues from body language can be very important in our interactions with others. If a person turns their body away from you they could be lying. If they often cover their face or mouth, or fidget often and unnecessarily with their hands, you might be being deceived.
Clearly, if a person continuously contradicts themselves, they could be lying. If their statements don’t make sense or correlate with previous statements, you should watch out for lies. Pay attention to the details, and if something doesn’t seem to add up you need to call them out on it.

However, if you really want to learn to spot lying, you should buy a book and learn some of the more in depth methods of detecting deception. This will improve your relationships by making sure you surround yourself with only the most honest of individuals.
