Getting to the Truth of Lies
The reasons people lie are endless. Every one of us has done it at some time or another. Maybe you just left a portion of the truth out, or maybe you exaggerated just a bit when telling your friends about that catfish you caught at the lake the other weekend? While most of us limit our lying to “white lies” and minor exaggerations, there are other people out there who lie compulsively.
The lies that most of us tell are usually harmless and really not a big deal. However, it is the pathological liars that we all should be careful about. Pathological (or compulsive) liars often times feel compelled to lie, at times for seemingly no reason at all. It is not always easy to spot this type of liar, but if you do a bit of research you will learn to tell when someone is not telling you the truth.
The psychology behind lying can get pretty complicated, especially when someone is a pathological liar. They do it for a lot of reasons. These could include the possibility of benefiting financially, avoiding punishment, or to simply look good in front of others. Other times, it may be for no reason at all, which would indicate that the person really has a problem. Since some of these people are accomplished liars, you need to be very perceptive if you want to be able to pick out the truth from the lies.
There are a lot of methods out there that will help you to detect a lie. If you put forth a little bit of time and effort, you can learn to spot a lie, whether it is pathological in nature or just your child lying to get out of trouble. If you learn to detect a lie you can save yourself wasted time and emotion that can come from being duped.
Most methods of lie detection involve paying attention to cues stemming from body language, eye contact, and voice patterns. A keen eye can look for certain patterns in these areas that most liars seem to share. With a bit of practice a person can detect these patterns and eventually learn to pick out the lies from the truth on a consistent basis. This can be beneficial for just about anyone, in both their personal and professional lives. Doing just a little bit of research can provide you with a skill that will improve your relationships for the rest of your life!
