Malicious vs. Beneficial lies
There are many reasons for a person to lie. Sometimes a little lie is beneficial for us all, while many other times it is not. For example, when your girlfriend asks you if the dress she is wearing makes her look fat, the answer is almost always a resounding NO! It does not matter if the dress is 3 sizes too big and makes her look like Roseanne Barr, you say no! This not only saves you from spending the night in the doghouse, but also saves her self-esteem. However, there are also ways to earn some points in this type of situation by telling the truth. If the dress really does make her look fat, and she states that this is her opinion, you MAY be able to (very carefully) tell her the truth. If you keep her from wearing the dress and finding out from her friends the unflattering effects it produces, you could earn some serious points, and she will value your opinion. Be careful though, because if you are going to tell the truth, you need to be very SUBTLE! Don’t simply tell her the dress makes her look fat, but say something like, “well I don’t know sweetie, but I think that other dress over there make you look even more beautiful than this one does. It accentuates your lovely hips. You have stunning hips, and this dress sort of hides that.” If you go at it in the right way, by telling the truth in sticky situations like these you will earn your girlfriend’s respect and she will rightfully value your opinion.
Another time that telling a lie might be to your advantage is in a job interview. Again, you need to extra careful about this one, as there are many ways to know when someone is lying, and a well-trained eye can always spot a liar. You may not always want to be entirely honest when answering questions in a job interview. It may sound bad, but if you really want the job, telling a couple little “white lies” may be to your advantage. For example, if the interviewer asks you what your worst quality is, you probably don’t want to be entirely honest. Don’t tell them that you are habitually late and have an unwavering streak of obstreperousness! And when they ask you why you want to work for their company, don’t tell them that the recession has got you desperate and you will pretty much take anything that will pay the rent! Tell them something that might be just a tad bit embellished, such as how you have a passion for the insurance industry, or whatever it may be, and that you want to work for a reputable company such as bustsliars ico.
No matter your reason for lying, you always should make sure it is really worth it. Before you tell a whopper, or even exaggerate just a little, you need to think to yourself: “will this lie hurt someone, and what will happen if they find out I am lying?” No one likes a liar, and many people can spot a liar, so before you tell a whopper make sure that it is absolutely necessary!
